Every ball arrives at a different speed, height, depth and trajectory. Your job is to organize your movement and swing so that the racket arrives at the right place at the right time.

When your timing is good, you consistently meet the ball out in front. You have room to accelerate the racket, generate topspin and control the direction of your shot.

When your timing is off, everything becomes more difficult.

You're late. You're early. You get jammed. You reach.

And suddenly a technically sound forehand becomes an inconsistent one.

Several things influence timing, but we're going to focus on one of the most overlooked:

Your non-dominant hand.

Used correctly, your non-dominant hand helps organize your unit turn, establish your preparation and create a consistent transition into the forward swing.

But release it too early — or hold onto the racket too long — and it can disrupt the entire sequence.

Watch: How to Improve the Timing on Your Forehand

In this PlayYourCourt lesson, Nate demonstrates how the non-dominant hand influences forehand preparation and shows what happens when you release the racket too early or too late.

Let's break it down.

Why Your Non-Dominant Hand Matters

Start in your normal ready position with your non-dominant hand on the throat of the racket.

As soon as you recognize a forehand, initiate your unit turn with both hands.

For a right-handed player, that means allowing the left hand to help carry the racket back as your shoulders and torso turn.

That accomplishes several important things.

First, it helps create a true unit turn instead of simply pulling the racket backward with your hitting arm.

Second, it keeps unnecessary tension out of the dominant arm. Instead of muscling the racket into position with your right arm, the left hand helps transport the racket while your hitting arm remains relatively relaxed.

Third, it helps keep the racket organized and the racket head in an athletic position during the preparation.

Watch virtually any elite forehand and you'll see some variation of this two-handed preparation. The exact shape and size of the backswing may differ, but the principle remains:

The body turns and the non-dominant hand helps organize the preparation.

Losing doubles you should win?

The Doubles Blueprint fixes the three positioning mistakes costing you matches — in about 20 minutes. .

            Get the Blueprint →

Used by 25,000+ players

Weak or inconsistent serve?

The 5-Minute Power Serve Sequence fixes your racket drop — add up to 15 mph without swinging harder. .

            Get the Sequence →

5 minutes on court

Stuck at 3.5 singles?

The 4.0 Singles Blueprint shows the three decision-making fixes that win matches — no new strokes required. .

            Get the Blueprint →

About 20 minutes

    (function() {
        function initRandomFunnelCtas() {
            var wraps = document.querySelectorAll('.pyc-random-funnel-wrap:not([data-pyc-funnel-ready])');
for (var w = 0; Swing on time.

A lot of recreational players do the opposite.

They prepare late and then swing fast because they're trying to catch up.

That's where rushed forehands come from.

Early preparation gives you time to track the ball, adjust your feet, establish your spacing and allow the forward swing to happen naturally.

These are useful timing checkpoints rather than rigid laws. A 90-mph incoming groundstroke obviously requires a different rhythm than a slow, looping ball. But for the typical recreational player who struggles with late contact, they provide an excellent framework.

Mistake #1: Letting Go Too Early

This is extremely common.

A player recognizes the forehand, starts turning and immediately removes the non-dominant hand from the racket.

The problem is that the hand separates before the shoulders have completed enough of the unit turn.

Now the hitting arm has to finish the preparation by itself.

Instead of the torso carrying the racket into position, the arm begins working independently.

That can create an incomplete shoulder turn, excessive hitting-arm tension, an inconsistent backswing and ultimately a rushed forward swing.

You may have heard the instruction:

"Point at the ball with your left hand."

That's not necessarily a bad cue.

The problem is when you point.

Don't immediately remove your hand from the racket and reach toward the incoming ball.

First, allow your non-dominant hand to help establish the unit turn.

Then separate.

Turn first. Point second.

Mistake #2: Holding On Too Long

The opposite mistake can be just as disruptive.

Some players keep their non-dominant hand attached to the racket deep into the backswing.

Yes, this can create a massive shoulder turn.

But bigger isn't necessarily better.

Eventually that hand has to get out of the way.

If you've carried the racket excessively far around your body before separating, you've added movement that must now be reorganized before the racket can accelerate toward contact.

The result can be a forehand that feels late, complicated and rushed.

Remember:

The purpose of the unit turn isn't to create the biggest backswing possible. It's to efficiently prepare the body and racket for the incoming ball.

Once you've created enough coil, the hands need to separate so the racket can transition into the next phase of the swing.

Use Your Shoulder as the Release Checkpoint

So when exactly should your non-dominant hand leave the racket?

Instead of obsessing over an exact moment in time, use your body as the reference.

For most players, a useful checkpoint is to allow the non-dominant hand to carry the racket until the hand reaches approximately the line of the hitting-side shoulder.

Then separate.

Advanced players with larger or more dynamic forehands may carry the racket slightly deeper. That's perfectly fine.

We're not trying to manufacture one identical backswing for every player.

We're trying to avoid the two extremes:

Don't abandon the racket before you've turned.

But also:

Don't carry the racket so far around your body that you delay the forward swing.

Your shoulder provides the technical checkpoint.

The incoming ball provides the rhythm.

The Non-Dominant Arm Doesn't Stop Working

This is another important distinction.

Once your non-dominant hand releases the racket, its job isn't finished.

Allow that arm to extend toward the incoming ball.

This position can help you judge the incoming ball, maintain spacing and preserve your upper-body coil while you're adjusting your position.

Then, as you initiate the forward swing, the non-dominant arm folds back toward the body as your torso rotates.

The two sides of your body aren't operating independently.

Your non-dominant side helps organize and balance what your hitting side is doing.

A simple way to remember the sequence is:

TURN → SEPARATE → TRACK → ROTATE

That's your forehand timing framework.

Timing Starts Before the Forward Swing

This is where many recreational players misunderstand timing.

They think they're late because they swung late.

Usually, the problem started much earlier.

If you recognize the ball late…

Turn late…

Move late…

Or prepare late…

…your forward swing has almost no chance of arriving on time.

Then your arm has to compensate.

That's when you see players suddenly yank the racket forward because they realize the ball is already on top of them.

Good timing should feel much less dramatic.

Recognize → Turn → Move → Separate → Accelerate

The earlier stages of the stroke create time for the later ones.

Prepare Early, But Don't Swing Early

This distinction is critical.

We want to prepare early.

We don't necessarily want to swing early.

Elite players often establish their unit turn almost immediately after recognizing where the ball is going.

But they don't immediately fire the racket forward.

The early preparation gives them time to move, track the ball, make adjustment steps and synchronize the forward swing with the incoming shot.

That's why the net-and-bounce checkpoints can be so effective.

Get the unit turn established before the ball crosses the net.

Get the racket prepared before the bounce.

Then you have time.

Instead of racing the incoming ball with your backswing, you're waiting from an organized position and timing your acceleration into contact.

Early preparation creates time.

Late preparation steals it.

Your Feet Still Control Your Contact Point

Your non-dominant hand can improve your timing, but it cannot rescue poor movement.

You still have to get your body into the correct position.

If you're too close to the ball, you're going to get jammed regardless of what your left hand does.

If you're too far away, you'll reach.

And if you're still moving dramatically when you're trying to make contact, your hitting position will constantly change.

Use larger steps to cover distance and increasingly smaller adjustment steps as the ball approaches.

Your goal is to create enough space for the racket to meet the ball comfortably in front of your body.

Think about it this way:

Your hands organize the swing. Your feet put the swing in the right place.

You need both.

The Goal Is Consistent Contact Out in Front

Everything we've discussed ultimately has one purpose:

Creating a predictable contact point.

When contact consistently happens slightly in front of your body, several things become easier.

You can accelerate the racket more freely.

You can generate topspin.

You can redirect the ball.

You can control depth.

And most importantly, you don't have to constantly make last-second adjustments with your hand and wrist.

That's why timing and technique are so closely connected.

You can have a technically beautiful forehand, but if the racket arrives six inches late, it's still a bad forehand.

A Simple Forehand Timing Drill

The next time you're rallying, take pace completely out of the equation for a few minutes.

Don't worry about hitting winners.

Instead, focus entirely on your preparation and non-dominant hand.

1. Turn

As soon as you recognize the forehand, use both hands to initiate the unit turn.

Try to establish the turn before the incoming ball crosses the net.

2. Prepare

Get the racket into its prepared position before the ball bounces on your side.

You should not still be taking the racket back after the bounce.

3. Separate

Allow the non-dominant hand to release around the point where it reaches the line of your hitting-side shoulder.

4. Track

Let the non-dominant arm extend toward the incoming ball while your feet continue making adjustment steps.

5. Rotate

As you initiate the forward swing, allow the non-dominant arm to fold naturally as your torso rotates through the shot.

6. Contact

Meet the ball comfortably out in front.

Then recover and repeat.

Don't judge the drill by how hard you're hitting.

Judge it by how consistently you can reproduce the sequence:

Turn → Prepare → Separate → Track → Rotate → Contact

The repetition creates rhythm.

And rhythm creates better timing.

Stop Trying to Fix Contact at Contact

If you're constantly late or early on your forehand, don't immediately start changing what the racket does at impact.

Look earlier in the sequence.

Ask yourself:

Did I recognize the forehand early enough?

Did I turn before the ball crossed the net?

Was my racket prepared before the bounce?

Did my non-dominant hand help initiate the unit turn?

Did I release it too early?

Did I hold onto the racket too long?

Did my feet create enough space?

By the time the ball reaches your strings, most of the things that determine whether you're early or late have already happened.

That's the real lesson.

You don't fix timing by making a frantic adjustment at contact.

You improve timing by creating a better sequence before contact ever happens.

Final Thoughts

If your forehand timing is inconsistent, start by simplifying your preparation.

Get your unit turn established early.

Use your non-dominant hand to help carry the racket into position without creating unnecessary tension in your hitting arm.

As a general rally-ball framework, turn before the ball crosses the net and have your racket prepared before the ball bounces.

Then use the line of your hitting-side shoulder as a reference for when your non-dominant hand should release the racket.

From there, keep the non-dominant arm involved as you track the ball, adjust your feet and organize the forward swing.

Remember:

TURN → PREPARE → SEPARATE → TRACK → ROTATE → CONTACT

You don't need to consciously manipulate every part of that sequence forever.

The purpose of practicing it is to make the preparation so repeatable that eventually you don't have to think about it.

That's when timing starts to feel natural.

And when your timing improves, you may discover that the forehand you've been trying to rebuild didn't need a new swing at all.

It just needed to arrive on time.

The short version Why your non-dominant hand may be the missing piece to cleaner, more consistent contact.
