And to be fair, there's a lot happening.

But complicated doesn't mean we need to make it confusing.

At PlayYourCourt, we like to break the serve into six specific movements. Learn them individually, understand how they connect, and then blend them into one fluid motion.

The biggest mistake is trying to fix everything while hitting full serves. Your existing motion and muscle memory tend to take over before you ever get a chance to make the change.

So we're going to do the opposite.

We're going to slow it down, separate the pieces, and build the serve back up.

Watch: The Tennis Serve Simplified

Want to see all six steps in action? Watch Nate Bolling's full "The Tennis Serve Simplified" lesson below, where he breaks down each part of the motion and shows you how to put them together.

Step 1: Start With the Continental Grip and the Right Stance

Before we start swinging, we need to get the foundation right.

For an advanced serve, start with a continental grip.

From there, you can use either a platform or pinpoint stance. Both work. What's more important is how the body is aligned.

We want the back hip stacked behind the front knee, generally within about a 45-degree angle.

Why?

Because that position gives you room to load the hip while allowing the upper body and hitting arm to work freely.

If you're too open, you lose some of the coil we're trying to create. If you're overly closed, you're making the motion harder than it needs to be.

We're looking for a position where the body can load naturally and then release that energy up into the ball.

Start with a continental grip and an athletic stance — back hip stacked behind the front knee.

Step 2: Let the Toss Start the Motion

The toss isn't something that happens separately from the serve.

It's actually helping start the serve.

We want the tossing arm moving primarily from the shoulder, not flicking the ball into the air with the wrist or bending excessively from the elbow.

Think about lifting the entire arm.

We also like holding the ball lightly in the fingertips. Think of holding an ice cream cone.

Nothing fancy. Just an easy release.

Here's another important piece.

Let the tossing arm lead the motion.

This does two things.

First, it makes the toss easier to repeat.

Second, it gives you time to recognize a bad toss before the hitting arm gets too far into the motion.

If the toss is bad, catch it.

There's no bonus point for hitting a terrible toss.

+15MPH

The 5-Minute Power Serve Sequence fixes your racket drop — without swinging harder.

        Learn the Sequence →
        365-day guarantee · 5 min on court

The Toss Also Starts the Body Load

As the tossing arm rises, we want to see the pelvis and shoulders begin to tilt.

This creates a rear pelvic tilt and starts loading the body underneath the ball.

Now we're not just tossing.

We're beginning to coil.

That's an important distinction because the tossing arm isn't simply putting the ball in the air. It's helping organize everything that's about to happen underneath it.

<img decoding="async" width="732" height="914" from the shoulder and let the tossing arm lead — the toss helps initiate the body load.

Step 3: Move the Racquet From Right to Left

For a right-handed player, the racquet starts on the dominant side with the strings generally facing down.

From there, it moves from right to left.

We sometimes describe this as a salute motion.

The goal isn't to immediately throw the racquet behind your back.

We want the racquet and arm moving into a position where the rest of the kinetic chain can take over.

This is where players often get into trouble.

They become obsessed with creating a huge racquet drop, so they manually shove the racquet down behind them.

That's not what we want.

The racquet drop should happen because of what the body does next.

<img decoding="async" width="861" height="1024" src="https://www.playyourcourt.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Photo-3.-Right-to-Left-861x1024.png" alt="" class="wp-image-10953" racquet from right to left — a salute motion, not a forced racquet drop.

Step 4: Load From the Ground

This is where we start creating energy.

As the body loads, allow the heels to lift.

That helps us use the ground to initiate the kinetic chain.

Notice that we didn't say:

Jump.

Players hear "use your legs" and immediately start trying to launch themselves three feet off the court.

You don't need to manufacture a jump.

Load against the ground and then drive upward.

If your feet leave the court as a result, great.

The goal is the upward force, not the jump itself.

That energy begins in the ground and works its way up through the legs, hips, torso, shoulder, arm, and eventually the racquet.

That's how we create effortless racquet speed.

Step 5: Lead With the Elbow

This is one of the simplest ways we teach the racquet drop.

Instead of thinking:

Drop the racquet.

Think:

Raise the elbow toward the ball.

When the elbow goes up, the racquet naturally goes down.

High elbow.

Low racquet.

This gives us the racquet drop we're looking for without forcing the racquet behind the body.

It also keeps the motion connected to everything happening underneath it.

The legs are driving.

The torso is unwinding.

The elbow is moving upward.

The racquet is trailing behind.

Now we've created the conditions for the racquet to accelerate.

And that's the important part.

Racquet drop is an effect, not an action.

Create the right sequence and the drop takes care of itself.

High elbow, low racquet — lead with the elbow and let the racquet drop happen naturally.

Step 6: Extend to Contact and Let Pronation Happen

As the elbow drives upward, the lower arm begins to extend toward the ball.

At contact, we want the arm essentially straight, but not perfectly stacked directly above the shoulder.

There should be some offset.

That's important both mechanically and for protecting the shoulder.

Now we get to everyone's favorite serve word:

Pronation.

Players love trying to manufacture pronation.

Don't.

You don't need to consciously snap your wrist or aggressively turn the racquet at the last second.

If you're using the continental grip, your arm is extending correctly, and you're making clean contact, the forearm and racquet will naturally rotate through the ball.

The transition happens incredibly fast.

Trying to consciously control it usually creates exactly what we don't want:

Tension.

Instead, focus on clean contact and let the arm unfurl naturally.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="570" src="https://www.playyourcourt.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/Photo-5.-Pronation-1024x570.png" alt="" class="wp-image-10955" snap.

How the Six Steps Work Together

Now let's connect everything.

You establish the continental grip and stance.

The tossing arm begins the motion.

The toss helps create the shoulder and pelvic tilt.

The racquet moves from right to left.

The legs load against the ground.

The body begins driving upward.

The elbow leads toward the ball.

As the elbow rises, the racquet drops.

The lower arm extends.

You make clean contact.

The arm naturally pronates.

That's your kinetic chain.

The important thing isn't just knowing the six positions.

It's understanding that each movement creates the next one.

That's why we don't want you manufacturing individual positions during a full-speed serve.

Don't Practice the Entire Serve Yet

This is probably the most important part of the process.

If you're trying to change your serve, don't immediately grab a basket of balls and start hitting full serves.

Your brain already knows your old serve.

And given the opportunity, it's going right back to it.

Instead, compartmentalize the motion.

Work on the toss by itself.

Then work on the hitting arm separately.

Practice the right-to-left racquet movement.

Feel the leg load.

Practice leading with the elbow.

Feel the racquet drop.

Work through the extension to contact.

You're creating new movement patterns without asking your brain to coordinate the entire serve at once.

Once those pieces start becoming comfortable, slowly put them back together.

Why We Separate the Tossing and Hitting Arms

This is especially useful when you're making a significant technical change.

Your tossing arm has a job.

Your hitting arm has a job.

When you immediately combine them, your existing muscle memory tends to take over.

Separate them first.

Build the new movement.

Then integrate them.

It's not as exciting as blasting serves for an hour.

It works a lot better.

The Biggest Mistakes We See

Forcing the Racquet Drop

Don't put the racquet into the drop.

Create the movements that cause it.

Raise the elbow and let the racquet fall.

Trying to Jump

Use the ground.

Load the legs and drive upward. If that produces a jump, fine. Don't turn jumping into another movement you have to coordinate.

Flicking the Toss

Lift from the shoulder and release from the fingertips.

The fewer moving parts we have in the toss, the easier it becomes to repeat.

Forcing Pronation

Don't snap your wrist.

Extend to clean contact and allow the natural rotation of the arm to take place.

Practicing Full Serves Too Soon

This is the big one.

If you're rebuilding your serve, full-speed repetitions often reinforce the exact motion you're trying to change.

Break it down first.

Then build it back up.

Coach's Take

The serve isn't really six independent things.

It's six things that cause one another.

That's the part we want you to understand.

A good toss helps load the body.

The load creates energy from the ground.

That energy drives the body upward.

The elbow leads.

The racquet drops.

The arm extends.

Pronation happens naturally.

Once you understand those relationships, the serve starts feeling a lot less complicated.

And that's really the goal.

We're not trying to give you six more things to think about while you're serving at 5-all in the third.

We're breaking the motion apart so that eventually you don't have to think about any of them.

Need someone to hit with?

Stop waiting on group chats. It allows the racquet to approach the ball correctly and gives the arm freedom to rotate naturally through contact.

Should I jump when I serve?

Don't make jumping the goal. Load through the legs and use the ground to drive upward. Your feet may naturally leave the court as a result of that force.

How do I get a better racquet drop?

Focus on raising the elbow rather than manually dropping the racquet. A high elbow naturally creates a lower racquet position when the rest of the kinetic chain is working correctly.

Should I snap my wrist when serving?

No. The racquet and forearm naturally rotate through contact when you're using the correct grip and extending properly. Forcing a wrist snap usually adds tension and makes the motion harder to control.

How high should I toss the ball?

High enough that you have time to complete your service motion and reach full extension without rushing. You don't have to contact the ball at the exact apex. The ball can drop several inches while still allowing for excellent contact.

Why should I practice parts of the serve separately?

Because your existing service motion is already deeply ingrained. Separating the tossing arm, hitting arm, loading pattern, and contact sequence allows you to learn new movements without immediately falling back into old habits.

Key Takeaways

Start with a continental grip and an athletic stance.

Position the back hip behind the front knee so the body has room to load.

Let the tossing arm lead and lift primarily from the shoulder.

Use the toss to help initiate shoulder and pelvic tilt.

Move the racquet from right to left rather than immediately forcing it behind you.

Load against the ground instead of consciously trying to jump.

Think high elbow, low racquet instead of forcing the racquet drop.

Extend to clean contact and let pronation happen naturally.

When making technical changes, separate the pieces before hitting full serves.

Understand the sequence instead of memorizing six positions.

The goal isn't to build a serve with more moving parts.

It's to understand the few movements that actually matter and get them working together.

That's how we simplify the serve.

The tennis serve has a reputation for being complicated.
