Austin runs a genuinely well-organized public tennis system, and the structure is worth learning before you try to play here. The City of Austin operates four staffed public tennis centers — Caswell, the Austin Tennis Center, Burnett “Blondie” Pharr and South Austin — plus Grey Rock in the southwest, and each charges a modest per-person fee that buys lighted courts, pro shops, ball machine rentals, clinics and staff who can match you into a program. Behind them sits a much larger free tier: court directories list 107 tennis court locations in Austin and more than 400 across the metro, most of them neighborhood park and school courts. Caswell Tennis Center, built in 1946, is the historic heart of it — eight lighted courts at 24th and Lamar, repeatedly named the city's best courts by the Austin Chronicle, and home to the Austin Women's Tennis Association's Monday PlayDays. The Capital Area Tennis Association runs one of the most active USTA league communities in Texas on top of all this. Court reservations open two days ahead, and fees typically run under $5 per person — central, historic and the busiest public tennis in the city.
• Burnett “Blondie” Pharr Tennis Center — 4201 Brookview Rd, Austin, TX 78722. Eight lighted Laykold courts next to Patterson Park, near Mueller and easily reached from I-35 or the east side. Pro shop with restrooms, lessons and clinics, and on-site racquet stringing from one of the state's better-known stringers.
• South Austin Tennis Center — 1000 Cumberland Rd, Austin, TX 78704. Ten outdoor hard courts, managed by Rippner Tennis and repeatedly recognized by the Austin Chronicle as the city's best tennis court. The hub of the 78704 tennis community and a host site for Austin Tennis Club social events. Open until 10 p.m. on weekdays.
• Austin Tennis Center — Johnny Morris Road, east Austin. Ten lighted courts, the flagship of the city's public system and the largest single public block inside city limits.
• Grey Rock Tennis Center — southwest Austin. The city's fifth tennis facility, serving the Circle C and southwest growth corridor.
• Free neighborhood park courts — Ramsey Park (7104 Berkman Dr, 78752, two courts), Bailey Park (6401 N Hampton Dr, 78723, two courts) and dozens more across the city, all free, all first-come.
• School courts — West Ridge Middle School, Pearce Middle School, LBJ High School and other AISD campuses open courts outside school and team hours, materially expanding free capacity in the suburbs and along the eastern crescent.

Austin's weather gives you twelve months of tennis and one serious problem. The good news first: roughly 228 sunny days, about 33 to 37 inches of rain across only about 79 precipitation days, effectively no snow, and January highs near 61°F with lows around 40°F — which means winter is the most comfortable playing season of the year and the courts stay busy through December and January. The problem is summer. August averages highs of 97 to 99°F, July is close behind, and the combination of heat and humidity from June through August regularly pushes the heat index well past 100 — genuinely unsafe for extended midday play. Local players adapt the way everyone in Texas does: sunrise sessions, or evenings under lights, which is why every one of the four city centers is lighted and why South Austin and Caswell stay open until 10 p.m. May is the wettest month at around four to five inches, arriving as heavy thunderstorms with real flash-flood risk in the creek beds Austin is built around — Shoal Creek runs right past Caswell. Getting to the courts is a driving proposition in a city with famously difficult traffic: Caswell is central and reachable by bus, Pharr sits near I-35 and Mueller, South Austin is off Lamar in 78704, and the Austin Tennis Center is out east on Johnny Morris. Free parking is standard except at the most central sites.

Austin tennis is growing about as fast as Austin is, and the infrastructure is being asked to keep up. The city's four-center model has held together well, the Capital Area Tennis Association keeps adult league play deep across every NTRP level from 2.5 to 5.0, and the University of Texas program anchors the top of the pyramid with NCAA-level events at the Texas Tennis Center. The strain shows in two places. First, the metro's population growth has been concentrated in the suburbs — Cedar Park, Round Rock, Lake Travis, Buda, Kyle — while the staffed public centers remain clustered in the central city, so a growing share of players are 30 minutes from the nearest one. Second, the summer heat is intensifying, and a season that already funnels play into early mornings and lit evenings gets shorter at the margins every year; covered or shaded court capacity is the obvious unmet need in a city with essentially no indoor tennis. Pickleball is expanding hard across Austin parks and, given the for-profit-lessons restriction on neighborhood courts, the competition there is purely for playing space. With national participation up 54% since 2019 and a record 14.5 million Americans playing 10 or more times a year, expect more suburban court construction, more early-morning league play, and continued growth in coaching that meets players at whichever court they can legally use.
