Close-Up: The Tennis Scene in Atlanta, GA

Atlanta, GA is the fifth largest metropolitan city in the United States and boasts a tennis-playing population to match. ATL is home to over 7,000 tennis courts and with its warm climate offers year-round playing potential outdoors. There are countless tennis leagues and organizations that ensure you will always be able to find not only a court, but a partner, opponent, league or event!

Not only is it a fantastic place to play the game, but it is also a wonderful place to be a tennis fan! Home to the BB&T Atlanta Open, a US Open Series ATP Tour 250 level tennis tournament, it attracts many of the top male players in the world each August. Being a smaller event, it is a wonderful place to be able to get up close and personal with the pros and watch tennis played at its highest level.

The Atlanta Open is a unique experience for other reasons as well. In 2016, Taylor Fritz commented to the ATP World Tour that he had his racket in hand but couldn't find the practice courts. “I actually walked right by it when I was trying to find my court,” Fritz said. “I didn't think there were courts down there.”

By "down there" Fritz was referring to the practice courts built by the BB&T Atlanta Open that are (quite literally) in the parking garage of the Atlanta Station; the shopping and dining midtown Atlanta area where the tournament is held. The tournaments two show courts are smack dab in the middle of the parking lot with the stands built up around them. Not a bad experience for viewers and players alike, not to mention everything (like restaurants, hotels, etc.) is within five minutes walking distance.
