Close-Up: The Tennis Scene In Madison, WI

Those who are not familiar with Madison may be surprised to know that it is one of the most renowned sports towns in the country, but if you have lived in, or visited Madison, you will know that may be an understatement. While the winters are brutal, Madison is home to an extraordinary tennis scene. The Greater Madison Tennis Association has been promoting the growth of tennis in the area since its creation over twenty-five years ago. Members can join for $15 per year, which gives them access to junior and adult programs, social events, and tournament play.

The John Powless Tennis Center is the finest facility for year-round tennis in Madison. In fact, it is one of the finest tennis facilities in the country. It was recently ranked the best facility in the state and the entire midwest, and was a finalist for the USTA’s exclusive best tennis facility in the nation award. There are 8 indoor courts, 6 outdoor courts, a full-service pro shop and much more. Members enjoy benefits like on-site child care, secure, expansive locker rooms, community rooms, and a staff of front-desk employees helping to take care of all your tennis needs. Throughout the year they run clinics, tournament training lessons, and full-scale USTA tournaments. It is a great place to not only improve your game, but to watch great tennis at the junior and adult levels as well!

Madison is also home to the University of Wisconsin. The university’s athletic department is best known for its success in football, basketball and hockey, but their tennis program has risen to national prominence in recent history as well. They play at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium, a facility that is home to 18 courts and has been rated by the USTA as one of the finest in the country. Each week, over 6,000 students, faculty and members of the local community use the courts. Fans descend upon the arena for every home match, and the crowd gets quite raucous as it fills up to its 1,500 person capacity.

If you prefer to play tennis in a more intimate, private setting, the Cherokee Country Club is for you. Cherokee Country Club is Madison’s undisputed best private tennis facility, popular among families and renowned for its junior programs. The facility boasts 8 indoor courts, and 4 outdoor clay courts where you can regularly see the top junior players in the country as they hone their skills on the way to college scholarships.
